About me
I was born in Turkey in 1978 and graduated from Anadolu University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in the Ceramic Department in 2001. I then completed my Master of Fine Arts in the Ceramic Master Program at Anadolu University in 2004 and earned my Proficiency in Art in Ceramics from Hacettepe University in 2012. Over the past 15 years, I have served as an academic at various universities across Turkey, holding the title of Associate Professor, a permanent designation granted by the Turkish University Council Committee. I have showcased my work in 13 solo exhibitions in countries such as Turkey, Germany, Croatia, and Italy, and I have participated in over 80 national and international group and competition exhibitions worldwide. My achievements include six awards, and my research papers and articles have been published in international journals. My artwork is featured in several private and museum collections. In 2017, I relocated to Germany, where I have lectured on art at NATO Joint Force Headquarters in Brunssum and the Arts and Crafts Center in the Netherlands. Currently, I create art and conduct private courses at my studio, OlguArts.
About my work
Grounded in the significant symbolism of the mother goddess figures from Anatolia, my artistic practice is influenced by the area's abundant cultural and historical legacy. Throughout the years, my sculptures have evolved into modern and deeply personal representations of the female form, while still honoring the essence of the mother goddess. Earlier works often tackled social issues, including women's rights and gender equality; however, my current emphasis has turned toward my own viewpoints and interpretations. Personal themes such as home, homeland, belonging, and the shifting sense of identity shaped by living abroad have led to more intimate and individualized expressions. This evolution is reflected in the projection of visual recordings onto the surfaces of my figures, as well as within egg or oval shapes that suggest fertility and femininity.
The visual materials I collect—images of nature and everyday surroundings, travel route maps, and occasional handwritten notes—act as the groundwork for my creative endeavors. Utilizing a variety of printing and transfer decoration techniques on porcelain and high-fired clay, I often combine multiple methods in each piece. The sculptures are subjected to numerous firings, each introducing additional elements like glazes and gold lusters, while slips, decals, and transfer prints enhance the surfaces with richness and texture.
Interwoven themes of history, cultural heritage, femininity, and the concept of home constitute the intellectual foundation of my work. These concepts find visual expression in the layered techniques I utilize, resulting in figures and oval forms that resemble diary pages, unveiling personal reflections and imaginative stories. Through this collection, I aim to provide not only an aesthetic experience but also an invitation for viewers to embark on their own paths of introspection.
